A TRIP I'LL NEVER FORGET
I was nine when my family moved from Oklahoma to North Carolina.
It was February of 2012. I don't remember every little detail about that move since it was almost 11 years ago, but there's a particular story I will never forget.
The drive was about seventeen hours long. As you can imagine we were all exhausted by the time we got to our destination. For the first couple of weeks, I believe we stayed in a place about an hour or so from where we ended up living.
We later moved to a house in Landis, NC where we would live for the next few years.
A young couple we had met and become friends with offered to help us move.
He had a large open trailer that we were going to use for the larger items.
This way, we wouldn't have to pay for a moving truck.
I remember it being a very windy day which made things a little difficult.
We had to make sure everything was strapped in well on that open trailer.
Once we had finished, we began the short trip to our new home.
Little did we know, what would happen next would be unforgettable.
As we were driving down a somewhat busy highway, the wind seemed to get stronger.
The people who were driving made sure to drive as carefully as possible, but it wasn't enough.
As I said at the beginning, I was only nine, thus my siblings were even younger.
We had this outdoor toy, a whirly rocket sit and spin, that we all enjoyed very much.
It was on the back of the trailer along with several other items that were valuable or necessary.
Long story short, we finally reached a point where that stuff wasn't staying on any longer.
Our things began to fly off everywhere! We pulled over to the side of the highway as soon as we realized it, but we couldn't save everything. We lost a mattress, that outdoor toy, and possibly a couple of small things.
At the moment, it was not funny at all. Here we are, moving to a different place, 17 hours away from everything and everyone we'd ever known, and now we're on the side of the highway with our belongings scattered everywhere. I promise you, we didn't exactly think it was funny.
If you're reading this, you may not think it's funny either, but we do.
It may have taken us a few days, but it eventually became a laughing matter.
A story my family and I would never forget.
To this day, any time someone brings up moving, or we see someone driving with a flatbed trailer, we instantly go back to that crazy, hilarious memory.
Was it a bad day? Sure.
Did we lose belongings that were important to us? Yes.
But did we choose to make the best of it? Yes.
Proverbs 17:22 "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."
There are going to be many circumstances in life that are unexpected, crazy, and even weird.
In those moments remember to laugh. One day, you'll remember those moments and if you chose to smile instead of pout, they will make you laugh every time.
Very true. ❤️
